Open Wide

When I say I want an open kitchen, I want it to be open in a couple of different ways.

First off, it should be open to the living area for entertaining (and also because it might encourage cooperation in cooking, and it would just be nice not to be stuck in a hot kitchen behind a wall).

Secondly, I want the kitchen to literally open to the outdoors.  Again, this is a better layout for entertaining, and we do a lot of outdoor cooking and eating, and I’d hate to have to carry all of the contents of a messy meal (think raw meat!) through the whole house.

The room below has a great wide doorway, but because of our chosen architectural style, I might prefer the sliding doors in the second picture over French doors:
