My co-worker just bought a house with a large yard completely devoid of grass. He was perplexed by this, but I see it as a unique opportunity. Without grass established, you can do anything you want with a yard. Grass is great for coverage, cooling, and giving your house a neighborhood feel, but it also is expensive and labor-intensive to install and maintain. I suggested filling up at least part of his yard with rocks (or, hardscaping), like the pictures do below, and like we’ll most likely do in our new yard:

Both of the images above use rocks in the front of the house, and they look really great combined with tropical plants. Below, the rocks are used in the backyards to form patios, combined with unique landscapes, wood, furniture, and even water.
